Raymond Ostelo is professor of Evidence-Based Physiotherapy at the Department of Health Sciences, VU University, Amsterdam and at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, VU University Medical Centre. He also holds a position as Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Musculoskeletal Division of the George Institute for Global Health (affiliated with the University of Sydney, Australia) and at the Physiotherapy Research Group of the University of Bergen, Norway.
On top of his background in physiotherapy, Raymond received his master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology (cum laude) from the University of Maastricht in 1994. Since the year 1997 he has been studying musculoskeletal disorders, focusing mainly on studies of intervention effectiveness in primary health care. In addition to his scientific research in the musculoskeletal field, he is involved in clinical-metrical research. Since 2013 he is one of the program directors of the Muscoloskeletal Research Program of the EMGO+ Institute. He has been involved in the development of various multi- and mono-disciplinary evidence-based guidelines in the field of back pain.
His teaching mainly focuses on research methodology for Master by Research and PhD students. He is programme director of the Master by Research "Lifestyle and chronic disorders." He is also co-editor of a textbook on research methodology (in Dutch).
